Now That Is Good Advice....

In the movie "A League of Their Own", Jimmy Dugan played by Tom Hanks is a washed up, knees shot and drunk ex baseball player. When coaching the girls team, he signs a ball for a kid with, "Avoid the clap....Jimmy Dugan".

When the kid does not appreciate that on the ball Jimmy yells, "That's good advice!".

Today, someone close to me that happens to work at the same company was in a meeting that did not go well. In spite of my introduction to this post, she did not suggest that any co-worker or client avoid the clap although it truly is sound advice. She did send me a note about the meeting with these very simple tips to keep in mind when you meet with a client....a client that is VERY prepared without exception:

Easy rules to remember for a successful client meeting:
1. Know your shit.
2. Know your dates.
3. It’s okay to say “I’ll need to check on that for you.”
4. Silence is considered an affirmation of the negative. Never stay quiet when asked a question by an aggressor.
5. Take notes and do what you say you will do right away.

Sunday Rants

My favorite subject...global warming. Check this out. Go ahead....warm my day! Now I know that a streak of weather is nothing more than a streak. In the big picture of Earth, so is the trend everyone likes to call Global Warming. It is just the the timeframe is not one winter or year but 10-20. Big deal. Just like today's weather and last week's weather are just trends - blips on the radar. So - if you so insist it is real. Send some heat my way. My ga$ bill is getting high.

MOVIES

The Jason Reitman Film Festival continues. I was up late last night and decided to watch a movie that was fermenting on my DVR. I watched Thank You For Smoking. Good flick. Funny to a point. This movie boasted a list of some of my favorite "B" list cast members. They are A-list to me though. JK Simmons, William H Macy and Maria Bello. Yeah, baby! When it comes to my top 5 "LIST" chicks....you know the Friends list? Chicks you can do, no strings attached. No, it cannot be Luanne from accounting - it has to be someone that most people would never really have the chance to do. Anyway, she is on my list. Yes, my list is riddled with the likes of Jessica Alba, Helen Hunt, Eliza Dushku and Katie Holmes (also in the movie). I keep a place for Maria Bello. I don't know what it is about her. She just does it for me.

In looking at the list I have assembled above, how can annyone accuse me of longing for the 18 year old looking chicks? Look at that list! Maria Bello - born 1967. Meg Ryan - born 1961! Helen Hunt - born 1963! THE ORRACLE? Born 1970!! These women I chase are OLD! (sorry Cindy & Candy) Wow...way offtrack (as if there was some direction here!)

Lastly, I watched Sex And Breakfast. I had my doubts but it could have been good given the subject matter. Plus, Eliza Dushku was in it. Strange movie. I don't suggest you see it. Not very good. Eliza looked great. That's about it.

We finally made it to the theater to see Juno.

I think this is a great movie (obviously)! I think the writing was fantastic but the real star is Ellen Page. This girl played the part perfectly. Cindy (sister) said, "It is Ashlie". Others have said that it reminded them of Ashlie. I have to agree. It is Ashlie (except for the preggers part). Even Ashlie said it reminded her of her!

This movie is very funny and entertaining all the way through. It hits home with a sad and scary thing that happens to teens all over. For all of my shenanigans at the resort, it could have been me although I am way cooler than Paulie in real life.

I do not think former co-worker of mine, Diablo Cody nee Brooke Busey will get the Oscar, although it would get my vote. I do think Page could be given the award for her role as actress. This is a great movie. I think it was done in a way that bringing a teenager to it might actually make them think twice about sex. Let's hope so!

Warning Labels

Welcome to December! It has been a fast and furious November with a short vacation, some work travel and Thanksgiving. Over the last week, I have had a chance to settle in and catch up on family time, movies and some shopping. Oh, yeah - how could I forget....I got a little older over the recent days as well. I am officially on the dark side of the dark side of my 30s now.

With the movies (and the motivation for the title).....

I am on a cold spell. Let's say I am in a movie slump. I know, you'll say, "That is what you get for renting movies like that!" but generally, those movies appeal to me! Movies like Porkies, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, American Pie and even the later American Pie knockoffs where the only original character is Eugene Levy.

This weekend I checked out Reno 911 and Superbad. I guess it is hard to be upset with Superbad since it says it all right in the title! I have often shown my hatred for stupid movies like "Sideways" and "Pulp Fiction" but how could I have known? The title has no indication that the movie will be bad. Superbad did and I ignored it. The previews showed all the promise of a typical T&A, school age/college age hijinx type movie and it fell flat.

I did see Disturbia and loved it. That is not normally my type of movie but I really liked it. Also on the "OK" list was Waitress. It was typical and predictable but enjoyable throughout. I loved the wholesome, local girl played by the hottie Keri Russell. WOW!

Lastly, I close with a plea to the movie distributors. Don't tease me with the endless stories and articles on Diablo Cody's new movie Juno and then only play it at the "Uptown" theater. If this movie is as good as they say, I want it to be out in every theater! I would avoid it completely based on the limited release to the "arthouse" theater crowd but having read her book "Candy Girl" and frequent her blog "The Pussy Ranch", I know her writing is awesome. This movie should not disappoint. I guess she will have to be my closest brush with fame since she used to work at LTCG. She looked interesting and clearly did not fit in. Why oh why didn't I talk to her?
